Notes on Smooth Vs Feathered Genes:

¨The current theory that smooth or feathered is controlled by dominant and recessive genes is ridiculous. That theory was finally put to rest by the latest findings from Biojeans Labs.

¨The testing researched SS (Smooth), ss (feathered), Ss (one of each), the phases of the moon, the genetic influence of cream genes, and the magnetic poles.

¨They discovered that the selection process wasn't a genetic one at all, but a conscious one. Two weeks before birth, each puppy was allowed to choose "hair or no hair".

¨After birth, when they were asked why they had chosen to be smooth, the most frequent answers were: a) to be different from everybody else; b) ease of care - it eliminated all that brushing owners are prone to do; c) it has a sleek look and eliminates "bad hair" days.

¨Feathered dogs gave as their reasons: a) it added glamour, and a lot of hair causes people not to notice what else you have or don't have; b) it allowed for a variety of hair styles; c) without feathering, a wagging tail isn't as effective in clearing a coffee table.

¨Some pups had trouble making up their minds and ended with a compromise of "lightly feathered". They felt it gave them some hair, so they weren't naked, but it eliminated grooming problems and was the best of all possible combinations.

¨Biojeans Labs tells me that they are having considerable difficulty in getting human owners to accept the new findings, since humans like to blame everything on the genes, not realizing that in most matters, the salukis themselves make the choice. ©
